Did you know that by the year 2051, there will only be 1 landfill left in New Jersey?
This. This is why I chose to shift my focus to sustainability:
I had a impactful interaction with one of my customers that left me with a realization of the impact I was having on my customer's futures (you know the kids who were wearing the clothes). So, I created this mantra "For Their Future" and set goals for how the the business was planning on "becoming sustainable." Then 2020 hit, the world's focus changed, and I focused on asking questions during this time which would later lead me to taking a trip in 2021 to the cape my dump. This trip changed my trajectory of what I was focusing on in my own businesses.
After that trip I did some research and learned that New Jersey has 12 landfills, and that they have an average closure date of 2040. By the time the kindergarteners graduate college, there will only be 5 left. More than half will close and that's not the worst of it. By 2051, there will be only one left. Can anyone guess which one that is? The Cape May County dump.
So ya... pretty grim. So thats what motivates me now.
So how do you make a difference? You need to first rethink your mindset and commitments. How does one change their mindset? Well by first and foremost, embrace the discomfort of change. You have to be willing to look at things that are currently working and say how can we change things to have less of an environmental impact? For example, you probably have a paper towel source. You know the place that you always go to get them or maybe they always just show up and it's been working.
But you should look at how to eliminate that expense and waste.
The next step is to rethink your processes and supply chain. Eliminate the unnecessary. Buy less, reuse more, save money and gain credibility.
there is no such thing as being 100% sustainable. The last step is to rethink your communication to customers, friends, etc. to also get these people on board.
Sustainability means something different to each one of us, and like us, is constantly evolving. Everything has the ability to be innovated, examined, and updated ––and done so on a regular basis.
Some certifications to work toward include:
NJ Certified Sustainable Business.
1% of the Planet
Certified B Corp
All have various expectations and requirements, but going through them will help you understand the right questions to be asking. I suggest everyone start at the NJ level and that will prepare you for a larger one.
