What is the NJ Sustainable Business Registry?

The New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry was established to acknowledge and highlight businesses, nonprofits, and higher education institutions across the state that are committed to sustainable practices. Launched in the fall of 2014, the registry is a collaborative effort between Rutgers' New Jersey Small Business Development Centers (NJSBDC) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Supported by various business and environmental partners, and initially funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the registry aims to foster a greener future by promoting environmentally responsible business operations.

Becoming a Member of the NJ Sustainable Business Registry

Joining the NJ Sustainable Business Registry is not just an honor—it’s a responsibility. To qualify for membership, businesses must demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by creating an online profile and sharing:

• A brief written description of five sustainable actions or practices they have adopted.
• At least one measurable environmental benefit from these practices.
• One cost-saving outcome from these efforts.

Membership must be renewed every two years by adding a new sustainable practice and measurable environmental benefit.

The Goals of the NJ Sustainable Business Registry

The registry's mission is multifaceted. It aims to:

1. Recognize and promote sustainable businesses throughout New Jersey: By showcasing businesses that adopt green practices, the registry helps to elevate those making a positive environmental impact.
2. Support NJ businesses in implementing sustainable practices: The registry offers access to NJSBDC Sustainability Consultants at no cost, providing invaluable guidance on how to adopt and improve sustainable operations.
3. Educate and inspire: By sharing resources on sustainability, the registry encourages all New Jersey businesses to explore and adopt environmentally friendly practices.
4. Increase transparency for consumers: By providing clear and accessible information about the sustainable practices of registered businesses, the registry helps consumers make informed choices.

The NJ Sustainable Business Registry promotes continuous sustainability improvements, offering resources on a variety of topics including waste management, energy conservation, transportation, water usage, and certification programs.

• A reduction of 160,718,568 gallons of water.
• A reduction of 1,492,790 gallons of fuel.
• A reduction of 11,709,222 miles traveled.
• A savings of $65,506,521.
• A reduction of 136,672,014 kilowatt-hours of energy.
• A reduction of 478,351,258 pounds of waste.
• A reduction of 117,918.68 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e) in greenhouse gases.
